Reimbursable Employers Forgiven UI Debt for Hurricanes Katrina & Rita

HB186 of the 2008 Regular Session was signed into law by Governor Bobby Jindal on June 28, 2008 (Act 512). This Act forgives unemployment compensation debt for reimbursable employers who owe reimbursement payments for benefits paid as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Reimbursable employers were to begin making such payments beginning July 1, 2008, but the current Act repeals the requirement to reimburse such payments. The Act also provides that the state has the right to recoup any funds from private entities or their insurers offering any form of guarantee against the unemployment claims chargeable to the employer’s account for unemployment claims covered in this Act.
