La. Unemployment Insurance Tax Dept. wins national award

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Louisiana’s Office of Unemployment Insurance Administration (OUIA) has earned the highly coveted UI Performance award for excellence in UI Tax Operations for a medium state from the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL).

Renita Ward Williams, OUIA Assistant Secretary, accepted the award on Sept. 20 at the National Association of State Workforce Agencies’ (NASWA) Workforce Summit and UI Directors’ Conference in Birmingham, Ala.

In November 2017, Williams earned the distinction of being selected by NASWA as Chairperson of its Interstate Benefits (IB) Committee.

The award was announced on the heels of the state’s Revenue Estimating Conference meeting to review the Louisiana Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, which is projected to have a balance of $1 billion this year. The state’s trust fund, managed by the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC), is the 12th-strongest unemployment trust fund in the nation, despite its taxable wage base for businesses being the second-lowest in the nation.

“I commend Assistant Secretary Renita Ward Williams and the entire UI team for their hard work and dedication,” said Ava Dejoie, Secretary of the Louisiana Workforce Commission. “Their hard work and commitment to excellence is unparalleled. ”
