Initial unemployment insurance claims rise for week ending Aug 18

BATON ROUGE – The initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Aug 18, 2018 rose to 2,193 from the previous week’s total of 2,111. For a comparison, during the week ending Aug 19, 2017, 2,570 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 2,170 from the previous week’s average of 2,171.

The unemployment insurance continued claims for the week ending Aug 18, 2018 decreased to 18,104 from the previous week’s total of 18,811. The continued claims were below the comparable figure of 22,115 for the week ending Aug 19, 2017.

The four-week moving average of continued claims decreased to 18,935 from the previous week’s average of 19,208.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission is committed to providing open access to job fairs across the state, so that everyone has an opportunity at a family-sustaining career. Today from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., the Baton Rouge North American Job Center is hosting a recruiting event for Capitol City Produce. There is no cost to attend and all are welcome to stop by.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) has countless tools both in person and online to help claimants file and process their claims. This is in addition to the agency’s 62 local offices statewide, job fairs, training programs, apprenticeship opportunities and numerous other services.

Updates to the LWC’s unemployment information processing system are still being implemented. As a result, the following data are not currently available: the break-out of interstate claims, Louisiana unemployment insurance claimants' parish of residence and unemployment insurance claims by industry.
