Initial unemployment insurance claims drop for week ending July 21

BATON ROUGE – The initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending July 21, 2018 dropped to 2,198 from the previous week’s total of 2,525. For a comparison, during the week ending July 22, 2017, 2,700 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 2,292 from the previous week’s average of 2,308.

The unemployment insurance continued claims for the week ending July 21, 2018 increased to 19,196 from the previous week’s total of 18,963. The continued claims were below the comparable figure of 23,260 for the week ending July 22, 2017.

The four-week moving average of continued claims increased to 18,981 from the previous week’s average of 18,851.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) works across all sectors of Louisiana’s industries to ensure that everyone will have an opportunity at a family-sustaining career. On Tuesday, July 31, Military Sealift Command (MSC) will be hosting a career fair at the Terrebonne Career Center in Houma, La. Two informational sessions will be open to the public beginning at 10 & 11 a.m. MSC will be looking to hire Communication Officers, Steward Cooks and Electronic Technicians.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) has countless tools both in person and online to help claimants file and process their claims. This is in addition to the agency’s 62 local offices statewide, job fairs, training programs, apprenticeship opportunities and numerous other services.

Updates to the LWC’s unemployment information processing system are still being implemented. As a result, the following data are not currently available: the break-out of interstate claims, Louisiana unemployment insurance claimants' parish of residence and unemployment insurance claims by industry.
