Initial unemployment insurance claims drop for week ending June 16

BATON ROUGE – The initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending June 16, 2018 dropped to 2,541 from the previous week’s total of 2,883. For a comparison, during the week ending June 17, 2017, 2,922 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 2,857 from the previous week’s average of 2,810.

The unemployment insurance continued claims for the week ending June 16, 2018 increased to 18,306 from the previous week’s total of 17,417. The continued claims were below the comparable figure of 23,492 for the week ending June 17, 2017.

The four-week moving average of continued claims increased to 16,971 from the previous week’s average of 16,209.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) is committed to connecting job-seekers to Apprenticeship programs that provide an alternative pathway to family-sustaining careers. The U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) has awarded continuation funding to the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC)’s Apprenticeship Division, totaling $1.27 million. The State Apprenticeship Expansion grant will support efforts to increase the number of apprentices and programs throughout Louisiana, to improve and develop new curricula, and to further engage in outreach initiatives.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) has countless tools both in person and online to help claimants file and process their claims. This is in addition to the agency’s 62 local offices statewide, job fairs, training programs, apprenticeship opportunities and numerous other services.

Updates to the LWC’s unemployment information processing system are still being implemented. As a result, the following data are not currently available: the break-out of interstate claims, Louisiana unemployment insurance claimants' parish of residence and unemployment insurance claims by industry.
