As deputy executive director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission, Jonathan C. “Jay” Augustine brings a blend of public and private sector experience. Immediately prior to his appointment, Augustine was a partner in Satchel Augustine LLC, a Baton Rouge-based law and consulting firm, where he specialized in representing private sector employers and municipal entities in litigation and counseling matters as well as non-profit groups on education reform issues. Before establishing Satchel Augustine, he was a partner in the New Orleans law firm Montgomery, Barnett, Brown, Read Hammond & Mintz, LLP.
From 2007 until his LWC appointment, Augustine also served as an elected member of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board, serving as the board’s vice president since 2008.
A native of New Orleans, Augustine has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Howard University and served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army. Following four years of decorated military service, he graduated from Tulane Law School and served as a judicial law clerk to Associate Justice Bernette Joshua Johnson of the Louisiana Supreme Court. He is a candidate for the Master of Divinity Degree at United Theological Seminary.
