Unemployment Insurance Claims Report March 5, 2010

BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ending February 27, 2010, increased to 4,203 from the previous week’s total of 3,541. The over-the-week increase was spread among multiple industries. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending February 28, 2009, figure of 3,497.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 3,981 from the previous week’s average of 3,885.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending February 27, 2010, decreased to 60,484 from the previous week’s total of 61,152. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending February 28, 2009, figure of 40,153.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 61,609 from the previous week’s average of 62,544.

The third chart included in this press release is for all regular unemployment insurance claimants who have received at least one check during the reference month in Louisiana. These claimants decreased by 4,522 from 63,626 in January 2010 to 59,104 in February 2010.
