BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ending January 16, 2010, decreased to 4,945 from the previous week’s total of 6,033. Initial claims decreased in various industry sectors over the week. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending January 17, 2009, figure of 4,527.
The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 4,541 from the previous week’s average of 4,543.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending January 16, 2010, decreased to 66,735 from the previous week’s total of 68,337. Continued weeks claimed decreased in various industry sectors over the week. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending January 17, 2009, figure of 38,176.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 66,184 from the previous week’s average of 65,830.
