Unemployment Insurance Claims Report November 6, 2009

BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ending October 31, 2009, increased to 4,533 from the previous week’s total of 4,287. The largest increases in initial claims were in the Construction and Wood Product Manufacturing industries. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending November 1, 2008, figure of 2,796.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,604 from the previous week’s average of 4,596.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending October 31, 2009, increased to 60,755 from the previous week’s total of 60,492, with the largest increases in continued weeks claimed found in the Construction and Wood Product Manufacturing industries. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending November 1, 2008, figure of 29,097.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 60,606 from the previous week’s average of 60,191.

The third chart in the November 6, 2009, Unemployment Insurance Claims press release is for all regular unemployment insurance claimants who have received at least one check during the reference month in Louisiana. These claimants increased by 2,372 from 52,901 in September 2009 to 55,273 in October 2009.

Then select LOIS (Louisiana Occupational Information System), and under Demographics and Statistics select Unemployment Insurance Claimants.

UI Weekly Claims Data Sheet is a new feature now available on the LWC Web site. This feature will print out a report with initial and continued claims for the current selection, prior week, and prior year. Weekly claims data can be accessed back to the week ending January 3, 2004. Begin on the LWC home page and select Labor Market Information (LMI). Scroll down the LMI page to the LMI Products section and select Unemployment Insurance (UI) Claims.
