BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ending September 5, 2009, increased to 5,302 from the previous week’s total of 4,357. The increase was spread throughout several industry sectors. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending September 6, 2008, figure of 2,808.
The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,641 from the previous week’s average of 4,479.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending September 5, 2009, decreased to 61,400 from the previous week’s total of 61,716. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending September 6, 2008, figure of 27,836.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 62,714 from the previous week’s average of 63,726.
The third chart in the September 11, 2009, Unemployment Insurance Claims press release is for all regular unemployment insurance claimants who have received at least one check during the reference month in Louisiana. These claimants increased by 2,448 from 55,736 in July 2009 to 58,184 in August 2009.
