BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ending August 29, 2009 decreased to 4,357 from the previous week’s total of 4,411. This marks the fifth consecutive week that initial claims have decreased. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending August 30, 2008, figure of 2,933.
The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 4,479 from the previous week’s average of 4,577.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending August 29, 2009 decreased to 61,716 from the previous week’s total of 63,420. The decrease was spread throughout several industry sectors. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending August 30, 2008, figure of 24,241.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 63,726 from the previous week’s average of 64,416.
