Initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased to 4,879 for the week ending July 18, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 5,367. For the fist time in five months initial claims were below the comparable year-ago figure. There were 4,943 initial claims for the week ending July 19, 2008.
The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 4,765 from the previous week’s average of 5,073.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 62,387 for the week ending July 18, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 61,275. The increase was spread throughout several industry sectors. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending July 19, 2008, figure of 27,810.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 60,679 from the previous week’s average of 59,435.
