Initial claims for unemployment insurance increased to 4,944 for the week ending May 23, 2009, when compared to the previous week’s total of 4,458. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending May 24, 2008, figure of 3,223.
The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,793 from the previous week’s average of 4,677.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 50,874 for the week ending May 23, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 50,008. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending May 24, 2008, figure of 20,473.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 49,534 from the previous week’s average of 48,800.
