Initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased to 4,458 for the week ending May 16, 2009, when compared to the previous week’s total of 5,531. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending May 17, 2008, figure of 2,614.
The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 4,677 from the previous week’s average of 4,924.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 50,008 for the week ending May 16, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 48,651. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending May 17, 2008, figure of 21,642.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 48,800 from the previous week’s average of 48,142.
