Initial claims for unemployment insurance increased to 5,448 for the week ending April 18, 2009, when compared to the previous week’s total of 3,981. The increase was spread throughout several industry sectors. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending April 19, 2008, figure of 2,764.
The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,976 from the previous week’s average of 4,717.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 47,377 for the week ending April 18, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 46,134. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending April 19, 2008 figure of 20,159.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 45,321 from the corrected moving average for week ending April 11, 2009 of 44,199.
