Initial claims for unemployment insurance increased to 5,910 for the week ending April 4, 2009, when compared to the previous week’s total of 4,563. The largest increase in initial claims was found in the NAICS Industry Code 336 for Transportation Equipment, followed by NAICS Code 321 for Wood Product Manufacturing. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending April 5, 2008, figure of 2,365.
The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,853 from the previous week’s average of 4,509.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 44,478 for the week ending April 4, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 43,295. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending April 5, 2008 figure of 20,568.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 42,973 from the previous week's average of 42,037.
The third chart in the April 13, 2009 Unemployment Insurance Claims press release is for all regular unemployment insurance claimants who have received at least one check during the reference month in Louisiana. These claimants increased by 6,193 from 37,060 in February 2009 to 43,253 in March 2009.
