Initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased to 4,414 for the week ending March 21,2009, compared to the previous week’s total of 4,526. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending March 22, 2008, figure of 1,862.
The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,243 from the previous week’s average of 4,178.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 42,887 for the week ending March 21, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 41,230. The largest increase in continued claims was found in the NAICS Industry Code 321 for Wood Product Manufacturing, followed by NAICS Code 23 for Construction. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending March 22, 2008, figure of 20,759.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 41,252 from the previous week's average of 40,561.
