Initial claims for unemployment insurance increased to 4,533 for the week ending March 7, 2009, compared to the previous week’s total of 3,497. The largest increase in initial claims was in the NAICS Industry Code 23 for Construction. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending March 8, 2008, figure of 2,376.
The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,059 from the previous week’s average of 4,011.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 40,737 for the week ending March 7, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 40,153. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending March 8, 2008, figure of 21,440.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 40,270 from the previous week's average of 39,900.
The third chart in the March 13, 2009 Unemployment Insurance Claims press release is for all regular unemployment insurance claimants who have received at least one check during the reference month in Louisiana. These claimants increased by 1,073 from 35,987 in January 2009 to 37,060 in February 2009.
