Initial claims for unemployment insurance increased to 4,154 for the week ending February 21, 2009, compared to the previous week’s total of 4,053. Initial claims were below the comparable week ending February 23, 2008, figure of 4,306.
The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 4,284 from the previous week’s average of 4,290.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 40,124 for the week ending February 21, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 40,067. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending February 23, 2008, figure of 21,221.
