Initial Claims for Unemployment Insurance Continue to Decrease

Initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased to 4,053 for the week ending February 14, 2009, compared to the previous week’s total of 4,338. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending February 16, 2008, figure of 2,455.

The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 4,290 from the previous week’s average of 4,409.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 40,067 for the week ending February 14, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 39,257. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending February 16, 2008, figure of 21,211.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 39,024 from the previous week's average of 38,551.
