Initial Claims for Unemployment Insurance Decrease

Initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased to 4,338 for the week ending February 7, 2009, compared to the previous week’s total of 4,591. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending February 9, 2008, figure of 2,283.

The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 4,409 from the previous week’s average of 5,031.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 39,257 for the week ending February 7, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 38,769. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending February 9, 2008, figure of 21,003.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 38,551 from the previous week's average

of 38,122.
