Initial Claims for Unemployment Insurance Decline

Initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased to 4,527 for the week ending January 17, 2009, compared to the previous week’s total of 6,825. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending January 19, 2008 figure of 4,359 for last year.

The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 4,150 from the previous week’s average of 4,512.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed increased to 38,176 for the week ending January 17, 2009, from the previous week’s total of 37,539. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending January 19, 2008, figure of 21,919 for last year.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 35,855 from the previous week's average

of 34,588.
