BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Workforce Commission announced that starting Saturday, Sept. 27, applications for new unemployment insurance claims will be accepted from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. every day except Sundays.
In addition, the Commission announced that starting on Saturday, it will use a single toll-free line for new claims: 1-800-957-1605.
For those with Internet access, the best way to file claims or check the status of existing claims is through the Commission's Web site at www.laworks.net.
The Commission has been operating its call centers for 16 hours a day, seven days a week since Hurricane Gustav struck, but as the rate of new claims returns closer to normal, some of the extra capacity can be scaled back.
People who have problems with or questions about their existing claims should call the Commission’s usual toll-free line, 1-866-783-5567, to have them resolved. The call volume on this line is still high, so people are urged to visit the Commission's Web site, at www.laworks.net, first if possible.
Benefits will begin in early October for people who have filed initial claims since the storms and who are determined to be eligible. Payments may be delayed in cases when employers have issues with the claims. In those cases, the Commission will contact the claims filers directly.
For those who have already filed a claim and wish to file for continued weekly benefits, LWC officials recommend they call any of the Easy Call numbers or submit their requests via the Commission's Web site.
