Louisiana Workforce Commission Updates Status of Unemployment Insurance Claims

BATON ROUGE Ė The Louisiana Workforce Commission today announced that all new storm-related unemployment insurance claims filed through Thursday, Sept. 18, have been processed. The Commission has mailed information to each filer on the status of those claims.

By law, most people filing claims are not eligible for benefits for their first week of unemployment. The earliest that most eligible filers will receive unemployment benefits for claims filed since Hurricane Gustav on Sept. 1 is the first week of October.

If an employer has an issue with a claim, payment could be delayed beyond that time period. In those cases, the Commission will contact the filer directly.

People who have problems with their claims should call the Commissionís toll-free call center, 1-866-783-5567, to have them resolved.

The Commission also reminds citizens that unemployment insurance is not for short-term lost wages, but rather extended periods of unemployment.

For more information on eligibility requirements and benefits for Unemployment Insurance and Disaster Unemployment Assistance, please visit the Louisiana Workforce Commissionís Web site at www.laworks.net.
