Plastech workers eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance

SHREVEPORT — The 168 workers who lost their jobs when Plastech Engineered Products closed its Shreveport manufacturing facility are eligible for retraining and re-employment services because the closure is the direct result of increased imports.

A petition filed with the U.S. Department of Labor requesting Trade Adjustment Assistance was approved when it was determined that increased imports prompted the closure of the facility. The TAA program provides services to workers who lose their jobs or whose hours or work and wages are reduced because of international competition.

The former employees will have the option of attending a TAA orientation session at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 24 or at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 25 at Plastech’s facility at 9630 Interport Drive.

A TAA worker transition center will be open at the facility from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, July 28 through Friday, Aug. 1. The center will offer computers, Internet access and staff to assist the affected workers with job searches, skills assessments, training information and résumé preparation.

Plastech, headquartered in Dearborn, Mich., supplies moldings to General Motors. The company closed its Shreveport facility because of an economic downturn in its business. The majority of the workers were laid off June 30.

“The services available through the TAA program are being offered in addition to the orientation sessions and worker transition center provided by the Rapid Response unit during May and June,” said Greg A. Anders, state Rapid Response coordinator. “These workers will benefit from the additional job search, job placement and re-training services to which they are entitled.”

Rapid Response and TAA services are offered at no cost to the employer or the participating employees.
