Labor Department Rapid Response unit to assist laid off Morton Salt employees

NEW IBERIA – Jobseeker assistance and transition services are being offered by the Louisiana Department of Labor Rapid Response Unit for the 57 employees of the Morton Salt Weeks Island facility who will be laid off between April 6 and April 19.

The employees are part of the company’s evaporation unit at the facility. The closure of the unit is expected to be permanent.

The Rapid Response Unit has organized a series of events to assist the employees.

• An employee orientation will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21 at Iberia Career Solutions Center at 124 E. Main St.

• A variety of workshops will be offered at the center the week of March 26. Topics will include résumé writing, interviewing skills and stress management.

• A Workforce Transition Center will open at the center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 through Friday, April 6 to provide information and help on résumés, job counseling, labor market information, Internet job searching, interviewing skills and vocational training.

• A job fair has been scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 5 at the Sliman Theater, at 125 E. Main St., directly across from the Iberia Career Solutions Center.
