Second Quarter 2006 Report Available

BATON ROUGE - Secretary of Labor John Warner Smith announced today that the “Louisiana Employment and Wages - Second Quarter 2006” report is now available on our Web site.

This report is based on quarterly tax returns from all employers covered by unemployment insurance. Parish lists include the number employed, total number of units, and total wages earned in North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) sectors and subsectors for the state and by two-digit NAICS sectors for all parishes.

According to the report, the average quarterly employment for Louisiana during the second quarter 2006 was 1,815,421. This indicated an increase of 46,539 or 2.6 percent as compared to the first quarter 2006, and a decrease of 84,077 or 4.4 percent from the same period in 2005. Employment increased in 19 of the 20 NAICS sectors from the first quarter 2006.

The report also shows that:

Total wages increased over $812 million or 5.3 percent from the same period in 2005.

Total wages also increased 0.1 percent from the first quarter 2006 or over $17 million.

The average weekly wage for the second quarter 2006 was $680.

The average weekly wage decreased $17 over the quarter, but increased $63 over the year.

Employers seeking plant sites to compare employment and quarterly wages paid by industry in potential locations can use this report. Market researchers use the report for market and consumer analysis. Public and private organizations use it in the administration and evaluation of manpower programs and policies.
