Initial unemployment insurance claims rise for week ending Jan. 6

BATON ROUGE – The initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Jan. 6, 2018 rose to 2,221 from the previous week’s total of 1,688. The shortened prior work-week due to the Christmas holiday contributed to the over-the-week increase in initial claims. For a comparison, during the week ending Jan. 7, 2017, 2,708 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 2,243 from the previous week’s average of 2,224.

The unemployment insurance continued claims for the week ending Jan. 6, 2018 increased to 19,560 from the previous week’s total of 19,517. The continued claims were below the comparable figure of 23,574 for the week ending Jan. 7, 2017.

The four-week moving average of continued claims increased to 19,334 from the previous week’s average of 19,194.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission’s (LWC) Helping Individuals Reach Employment (HiRE) network is a leading, online job-hiring network, connecting job-seekers and employers via family-sustaining careers. During the month of December, 5,063 jobs were posted within the HiRE network internally. Over the same time period, approximately 17,411 jobs were posted externally.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) has countless tools both in person and online to help claimants file and process their claims. This is in addition to the agency’s 59 local offices statewide, job fairs, training programs, apprenticeship opportunities and numerous other services.

Updates to the LWC’s unemployment information processing system are still being implemented. As a result, the following data are not currently available: the break-out of interstate claims, Louisiana unemployment insurance claimants' parish of residence and unemployment insurance claims by industry.
