Initial unemployment insurance claims fall in abbreviated reporting for week ending Nov. 7

BATON ROUGE – Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Nov. 7, 2015 decreased to 1,807 from the previous week’s total of 2,439.

However, the Louisiana Workforce Commission’s unemployment information processing system was offline Nov. 4-7. Filings reported are for Nov. 1-3 and a portion of Nov. 4. Because initial claims were not processed while the system was offline, the total probably is understated.

For the comparable week a year ago, ending Nov. 8, 2014, 2,352 initial claims were filed.

In the abbreviated report, retail trade showed the largest over-the-week decrease of 85 claims, followed by accommodation and food services with 81 claims. Initial claims for mining, which includes oil and gas exploration and extraction workers, decreased from 116 to 78. Data for others working in oil and gas support services are spread among various job sectors and are not included in the mining total.

The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 2,272 from the previous week’s average of 2,479.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending Nov. 7, 2015 decreased to 22,428 from the previous week’s total of 22,661. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable figure of 19,067 for the week ending Nov. 8, 2014.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 22,670 from the previous week’s average of 22,803.
