BATON ROUGE – Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Feb. 7, 2015, increased to 2,939 from the previous week’s total of 2,676, and were above the comparable week ending Feb. 8, 2014, figure of 2,392.
The increase in initial claims from the previous week was spread among several industries, with the largest increase in mining, which employs Louisiana’s oil exploration workers. Mining accounted for 293 initial claims, compared to 177 the week prior, although the mining sector represented only 10 percent of total initial claims for the week ending Feb. 7.
The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 2,783 from the previous week’s average of 2,949.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending Feb. 7, 2015, decreased to 21,325 from the previous week’s total of 21,755. Continued weeks claimed were below the comparable week ending Feb. 8, 2014, figure of 23,083. The largest over-the-week increase was 82 more in the mining industry for a total of 651 continued claims.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 21,781 from the previous week’s average of 21,987.
The total number of people who filed a claim for regular unemployment insurance in Louisiana, and received at least one check during the reference month, increased to 21,742 in January 2015, up 932 from 20,810 in December 2014.
