Private industry work-related injuries and illnesses decline in 2011
Louisiana employers encouraged to use agency’s no cost resources and services

Louisiana’s private industry rate of work-related injuries and illnesses in 2011 was the best yet since the revision of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration record-keeping rules in 2002.

Louisiana ranked second lowest in the nation in the 2011 Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses. The survey found private industry non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses in Louisiana dropped to an estimated 2.5 per 100 full-time workers, down from 2.7 the prior year, and below the national rate of 3.5.

“Louisiana's employers deserve tremendous credit for the attention they place on operating safe workplaces," said Curt Eysink, the executive director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission. "The LWC's Office of Workers’ Compensation supports their efforts by targeting its safety consultation resources to help employers in industries with higher accident rates protect their workers and reduce workplace injuries.”

Louisiana’s improvement in its private industry incidence rate is reflected in several industry sectors. The arts, entertainment, and recreation sector showed the biggest incidence rate decrease over-the-year of 1.8 per 100 full-time workers. Other sectors showing improved incidence rates were wholesale trade and professional, scientific, and technical services sectors, which each decreased by 0.7; retail trade and transportation and warehousing sectors, which showed decreases of 0.5; and the construction sector, which showed an incidence rate decrease of 0.3.

“We encourage businesses to let us partner with you to make your workplace safer,” Eysink said. “LWC’s services include OSHA consultation visits, workplace safety and health inspections, and training seminars, and they all can help save money and lower workers’ compensation costs.”

The agency’s free consultation services are also effective for smaller businesses. Those employers that take advantage of this service will receive a no-cost, confidential on-site and comprehensive safety and health survey by trained workplace safety consultants.

Louisiana employers can request a free OSHA consultation or workplace safety visit by calling the LWC at
