Unemployment Insurance Claims Report October 12, 2012

BATON ROUGE – Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Oct. 6, 2012, increased to 3,050 from the previous week’s total of 2,831. Initial claims were below the comparable week ending Oct. 8, 2011, figure of 3,727.

The four-week moving average of initial claims fell to 3,512 from the previous week’s average of 5,005. Last month, Hurricane Isaac had caused a spike in initial claims and also pushed up the four-week moving average. Both initial claims activity and the four-week moving average appear to be returning to pre-storm levels.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending Oct. 6, 2012, decreased to 31,541 from the previous week’s total of 31,883. Continued weeks claimed were below the comparable week ending Oct. 8, 2011, figure of 41,146. Excluding the week ending Sept. 1, 2012, the week of Hurricane Isaac, the week ending Oct. 6, 2012 had the lowest level of continued claims since the week ending Dec. 13, 2008 with 31,396 continued claims.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 32,413 from the previous week’s average of 32,501.

The total number of people who filed a claim for regular unemployment insurance in Louisiana, and received at least one check during the reference month, decreased to 28,537 in September 2012, down 2,253 from 30,790 in August 2012. September 2012 had the lowest monthly level since November 2008 with 26,648.
