Gov. Bobby Jindal proclaimed October as Disability Employment Awareness Month in Louisiana, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to ensuring the valuable contributions of residents with disabilities in the workforce continue to help improve life and work in our state.
Since 1945, Congress has designated October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in an effort to educate the public about disability and employment. This year’s theme is “A Strong Workforce is an Inclusive Workforce: What Can YOU Do?” The national theme promotes the benefits of a diverse workforce that includes workers with disabilities, who represent a highly skilled talent pool.
“We build our independence on our job,” said LWC Executive Director Curt Eysink. “Our work not only helps us lead self-directed lives, in many cases it helps to define who we are and our role in the community. We want to make sure workers with disabilities can fully participate in that, which is why the LWC is proud to once again lead the statewide 2012 Work Pays job fairs, collaborative efforts by many to assist individuals with disabilities to get jobs with employers that are looking to hire and grow their businesses in Louisiana.”
LWC in partnership with WORK PAY$, a consortium of agencies working together to increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, is responsible for coordinating the series of job fairs.
Since the job fairs began nine years ago, they have helped to connect roughly 13,000 job seekers with more than 1,300 businesses. The job fairs, which are free to both employers and job seekers, begin in New Orleans on Oct. 2, with events to follow in Slidell on Oct. 3, Shreveport on Oct. 9, Monroe on Oct. 10, Houma on Oct. 16, Alexandria on Oct. 17, Lake Charles on Oct. 22, Baton Rouge on Oct. 23 and Lafayette on Oct. 25.
