Governor designates week for safety and health awareness
Employers invited to fourth annual Governor’s health and safety conference

Governor Bobby Jindal proclaimed Sept. 23-29 as Safety and Health Awareness week in Louisiana and urged employers to continue efforts to keep workers safe.

The proclamation helps mark the fourth annual Louisiana Governor's Safety and Health Conference, coordinated by the Alliance Safety Council. This year’s conference, set for Sept. 26-27 at the Crown Plaza Hotel, 4728 Constitution Ave., Baton Rouge, focuses on the latest tools for businesses to advance safety, health, and preparedness.

“We’ve invited people to come together to share best practices, network and look at what other resources are available across the state,” Alliance Safety Council CEO Kathy Trahan said. “Each year we strive to provide a high caliber keynote address, quality speakers and relevant topics. This year is no exception and I think it will be a benefit to all who attend.”

Based on the latest data available, Louisiana’s private industry rate of work-related injuries and illnesses dropped to the lowest level since the federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration revised its record-keeping rules in 2002, the Louisiana Workforce Commission reported in 2010. Louisiana also ranked as having the fourth lowest incidence rate in the nation in the 2010 Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses for non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses.

“Gov. Jindal’s proclamation acknowledges commitments made by businesses in the public sector and private industries to create an environment in Louisiana in which safety is a priority, at the same time lowering costs related to workers’ compensation claims,” LWC Executive Director Curt Eysink said. “Fostering a partnership with the Alliance Safety Council offers LWC an additional opportunity to engage their membership, which is comprised of businesses that understand reducing risks maximizes productivity.”

Staff from LWC’s Office of Workers’ Compensation will available in the exhibit area in booths No. 24 and No. 25 to provide information and tips as well as to answer frequently asked questions regarding occupational safety and health in the workplace.
