The Louisiana Workforce Commission has introduced a new smartphone app to help job seekers interested in pursuing green jobs, along with an enhanced web site with tools and resources to help employers and policymakers stay competitive in Louisiana’s growing green economy.
GreenWorks is a free smartphone app that helps job seekers find jobs and keep up with trends in this growing sector of the economy. Green jobs are those that help protect or restore the environment, conserve natural resources or make an establishment’s production processes more environmentally friendly or use fewer natural resources. The app is available for download free at the Apple App Store and Blackberry App World.
LWC also has created a new green jobs portal at www.laworks.net with tools and resources for job seekers, employers and policymakers. The Growing Green portal features a job bank of environmentally responsible careers, an at-a-glance carousel of useful information plus a full range of career videos featuring people now working in green professions. A link to the app and to the new Growing Green portal can be found at www.laworks.net.
“There is keen Interest in environmentally responsible careers, and our research shows demand for these jobs will grow over the next decade,” said LWC Executive Director Curt Eysink. “Job seekers will find our smartphone app makes it a snap to explore green careers, while our enhanced web tools and resources also will help employers and policymakers track future demand and stay competitive.”
Visitors to the site are greeted by a video tutorial providing an overview of the site. The site features user-friendly navigation and interactive tools, customizable reports, economic impact studies, job projections and suggested career paths. Job seekers will be able to locate training programs for green jobs along with current green job openings in Louisiana. The site also provides useful information about the state’s coastal restoration efforts.
LWC’s Growing Green site, which was launched in August 2010, was developed as part of a larger effort to help researchers collect information about green activity in Louisiana. The site includes results of a green jobs survey, in addition to detailed findings on 22 industry profile reports.
The web enhancements are an outgrowth of the Louisiana and Mississippi Green Jobs Consortium, a partnership built on a $2.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to develop new and emerging high-growth industries. The consortium, led by LWC, includes Louisiana State University, the Mississippi Department of Employment Security and Mississippi State University. The group conducted extensive research on the regional green economy, and continues to develop workforce solutions and identify economic development strategies necessary to create green jobs.
Louisiana and Mississippi are home to a number of industries with considerable job growth potential related to the adoption of new technologies and business practices aimed at protecting and restoring the environment or conserving natural resources.
