A one-of-a-kind hiring fair for veterans, transitioning active duty military, National Guard and reserve members and their spouses will take place Friday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Pontchartrain Convention and Civic Center, 4545 Williams Blvd., Kenner.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission is partnering with several organizations for Hiring Our Heroes, which will help connect more than 60 employers looking to hire New Orleans area veterans and their spouses who are seeking employment.
Participating employers include Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold, Union National Life Insurance Co., Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel, Union Pacific Railroad, Harrah’s, Capitol One, Hilcorp Energy, The Hertz Corp., Wal-Mart plus many other employers that represent a variety of industries.
To help get veterans back into the workforce, federal tax credits are available to employers who hire unemployed veterans and also those with service-connected disabilities. The Veterans Opportunity to Work Act allows employers to get tax credits of up to $9,600 for hiring veterans. Veterans bring valuable experience and leadership skills, and often make strong job candidates.
Sponsors of Hiring Our Heroes include the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Capitol One, Hero2Hired, Entergy, and the Call of Duty Endowment in partnership with the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service, New Orleans Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, NBC News and other local chambers.
According to the U.S. Chamber, since the launch of Hiring Our Heroes in March 2011, the job fairs have connected more than 100,000 veterans and military spouses with more than 5,000 different employers. The events have helped more than 9,000 veterans and military spouses find employment.
The fair is free and registration is required for job seekers and employers. Veterans should bring copies of their résumé and be prepared to interview.
