Unemployment Insurance Claims Report Jan. 13, 2012

BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ending Jan. 7, 2012, increased to 4,372 from the previous week’s total of 3,219. The over-the-week increase in initial claims can be attributed to the first week of a new quarter for new and renewed UI claims, and a shorter work week due to the Christmas and New Year holidays for the week ending Dec. 31, 2011. Initial claims were below the comparable week ending Jan. 8, 2011, figure of 6,503.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 3,707 from the previous week’s average of 3,640.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending Jan. 7, 2012, increased to 44,904 from the previous week’s total of 43,247. The over-the-week increase in continued claims can be attributed to a shorter work week due to the Christmas and New Year holidays for the week ending Dec. 31, 2011. Continued weeks claimed were below the comparable week ending Jan. 8, 2011, figure of 51,967.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 43,419 from the previous week’s average of 42,749.

All regular unemployment insurance claimants in Louisiana who have received at least one check, during the reference month increased by 1,429 from 37,622 in November 2011 to 39,051 in December 2011.
