BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ending Dec. 3, 2011, increased to 4,789 from the previous week’s total of 3,014. Initial claims were below the comparable week ending Dec. 4, 2010, figure of 5,170.
The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 3,921 from the previous week’s average of 3,643.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending Dec. 3, 2011, increased to 43,656 from the previous week’s total of 40,027. The over-the-week increase in continued claims was spread throughout multiple industries. Continued weeks claimed were below the comparable week ending Dec. 4, 2010, figure of 51,509.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 41,097 from the previous week’s average of 40,228.
The over-the-week increases in both initial and continued unemployment claims can be attributed to the Thanksgiving holiday’s shorter work week, which impacted the number of claims processed the following week.
All regular unemployment insurance claimants in Louisiana who have received at least one check, during the reference month decreased by 638 from 38,260 in October 2011 to 37,622 in November 2011. The November 2011 monthly figure was the lowest number of claimants who received at least one check this year.
