Unemployment Insurance Claims Report May 6, 2011

BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) for the week ending April 30, 2011, increased to 3,955 from the previous short work week’s total of 3,388. Initial claims were below the comparable week ending May 1, 2010, figure of 4,574.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 3,905 from the previous week’s average of 3,814.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending April 30, 2011, increased to 43,883 from the previous week’s total of 43,635. Continued weeks claimed were below the comparable week ending May 1, 2010, figure of 56,857.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 43,422 from the previous week’s average of 43,476.

In April 2011, all regular unemployment insurance claimants who have received at least one check decreased by 2,674 from 42,519 in March 2011 to 39,845 in April 2011.
