Unemployment Insurance Claims Report December 10, 2010

BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) for the week ending December 4, 2010, increased to 5,170 from the previous week’s total of 3,205. The over-the-week increase can be attributed to the Thanksgiving holiday's shorter work week, which impacted the number of claims processed the following week. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending December 5, 2009, figure of 4,880.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,177 from the previous week’s average of 3,878.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending December 4, 2010, increased to 51,509 from the previous week’s total of 47,156. The over-the-week increase can be attributed to the Thanksgiving holiday's shorter work week, which impacted the number of claims processed the following week. Continued weeks claimed were below the comparable week ending December 5, 2009, figure of 65,092.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 48,932 from the previous week’s average of 48,048.

In November all regular unemployment insurance claimants who have received at least one check during the reference month in Louisiana increased by 3,179 from 39,060 in October 2010 to 42,239 in November 2010.
