Unemployment Insurance Claims Report June 4, 2010

BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) for the week ending May 29, 2010, increased to 5,166 from the previous week’s total of 4,645. The largest over-the-week increases in initial claims were in educational services and health care and social assistance industries as part of the usual summer seasonal pattern. Initial claims were below the comparable week ending May 30, 2009, figure of 5,753.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,719 from the previous week’s average of 4,571.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending May 29, 2010, decreased to 55,207 from the previous week’s total of 55,319. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending May 30, 2009, figure of 52,411.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 55,643 from the previous week’s average of 56,055.

The third chart included in this press release is for all regular unemployment insurance claimants who have received at least one check during the reference month in Louisiana. These claimants decreased by 309 from 52,937 in April 2010 to 52,628 in May 2010.
